What is a poacher?

A poacher is a striker known for his movement, pace and finishing. He is often seen moving in the box to get an inch of space to slot the ball towards the goal from a cross or pass, but may also be noted to get on the end of a through ball in order to use his pace to beat the last man.

Pros of the style

With a poacher you get an accomplished finisher who can be a menace to handle in the box due to the way he moves around it. Also you get his speed which often allows you to play balls on the ground towards him and pull men into him giving your team more space when on the ball.

He can also chase long balls creating quick attacks as he often sits on the opposition’s defensive line relieving pressure quickly and applying it in the same space of time, furthermore his pace can come into play against pressing teams as if he beats the man he will not be caught due to this high attribute.

Cons of the style

Due to the nature of the player you need a few creative players to feed him the ball whether they are AMCs or wingers, if his supply fails he won’t make that much of an impact so this is key. Also as he is reliant on his movement creating space to finish it being man marked out of the game by a strong player is a threat.

His lack of aerial ability however will create problems if crosses are aimed towards heads as he can get overpowered easily, meaning there are only a limited number of ways to play with most going towards the feet of the poacher.

Attributes needed

Good shooting, technique, positioning, decisions and movement are the attributes he will use when getting on the end of balls, however teamwork and pace is a standard build for a poacher too so it is a good idea to couple them with the others to get the perfect poacher.

How to make the style work

As mentioned above the creativity behind him is vital, he will need people to cross it and supply through balls to him when he is on the shoulder of the last man. Also a technique that is common is putting a strong player (think Rooney) with a poacher (think Defoe) in order to let him work around his partner to receive the long balls knocked down by the strong player. This also allows a mix up front creating more problems but isn’t needed as a poacher can be known to work alone.

Ronaldo can be anything really yet I doubt you will be using him fully in that role but this is the 2012 forum, if this question is for 2013 please keep it on the correct forum.
