Introduction

A few days ago, Sports Interactive announced that the two new playable leagues for Football Manager Mobile 2017 will be Poland and Turkey. In this article, I will be looking at the top division of Poland, looking at the unique format of it, to give readers more of an insight to a league not many people will know about.

How long does the season last?

The season over in Poland usually begins in late July, with it ending in May/Early June of the following year.

What is the format?

The Polish league format is like that of the Scottish Premiership. 16 teams compete, and play each other twice (Home and away) so that every team plays 30 matches. This is known as the ‘Regular season’.

The league then splits into 2 halves; The Championship round (Teams positioned 1st-8th) and the ‘Relegation round’ (Teams positioned 9th-16th).

The Championship round determines which teams qualify for the following seasons European competition. 1st will go into the UEFA Champions League, while 2nd and 3rd will go into the UEFA Europa League.

The relegation round, like it suggests in the name, determines which two teams are relegated from the Ekstraklasa.

In the second phase of the league (Championship and relegation rounds) each team plays the other teams in their round once, accumulating the total of games in a season to 37.

Who was the top scorer last season?

The top scorer in the Ekstraklasa last season was Legia Warsaw and Hungarian striker Nemanja Nikolic. His value in FMM 2016 was £2.7m, making him a cheap but possibly effective signing.

His tally of 28 goals helped Legia Warsaw to their 11th title last season.

Legia Warsaw - the biggest club in Poland (infrastructure, youth academy, training facilities). Lechia - powerful squad, large (over 40 thousand seats), average facilities. Look at their goalie Savić. Lech Poznan - very good squad, the largest stadium in top division clubs, nice other facilities. Jagiellonia Bialystok - Konstantin Vassiljev team star, many talented youngsters. Zaglebie would have the best youth academy, and good squad, but tiny stadium. If you like managing clubs with big history, but weaker in present time I'll propose you Wisla Krakow (raising fallen STAR). Large (33k stadium, good training facilities, weak youth academy). Ruch Chorzow, Korona Kielce and Gornik Leczna if you like fighting with relegation.
