Thanks Taff! It's been good to get out and try new leagues. Ha being stuck in Belgium for so long was beginning to drive me crazy but I do kind of miss them now

I must admit I had a great time in Belgium and Gent have a surprising number of good players, but maybe 8-10 seasons is a bit too long

Season 13

Auf Wiedersehen, Wolfsburg; Bonjour, France!

My time in Germany had come to an end, and it was time to start looking for work in France. The board had heard rumours that I was going to jump ship, and they weren't happy:

IMG_0520.thumb.PNG.cb0097207925941c385ad0f0ee162d29.PNG

Don't they know that I'm taking on a vibe.community challenge?!

The last game of my tenure was apparently Robin Knoche's testimonial match:

IMG_0521.thumb.PNG.f664d4a8ac0bb7b7ed7bbec54aefb2e8.PNG

I didn't realise you could get testimonials for players even if you hadn't been in charge of the club the whole time.

I applied for the first French club I could, and was swiftly accepted to take charge of… LOSC!

The Club

Whilst I wasn't impressed by Wolfsburg or Manchester City when I took over, I had no idea how easy I'd had it. LOSC were recently promoted and only had a squad of 15 players to start with.

IMG_0524.thumb.PNG.64c242c02d6a28dcb252043fbe8c6065.PNG

I quickly set about picking up free transfers and assembling a patchwork squad hopefully strong enough to compete. Amongst others, I snapped up Ousmane Dembele, Chuba Akpom and various old players from my previous clubs.

Things didn't start well though, as I was pummelled in my first game:

IMG_0526.thumb.PNG.5b7dbc338617b4cb9761c1274ae5fa23.PNG

The League

Despite that early set back, things did eventually start to click.

IMG_0531.thumb.PNG.394e0b5e35a9ed3029f409d77d1b8251.PNG

By the end of the season, we'd somehow managed to top the league, finishing clear of Monaco and PSG.

IMG_0532.thumb.PNG.781f5afdb867dfcba7c8c74c3a9cdd85.PNG

The Cups

Things didn't go quite as well in the cups unfortunately.

We weren't eligible for the Trophee des Champions, but there was still the French Cup and the Coupe de la Ligue to compete for.

IMG_0527.thumb.PNG.b5769b363c4357c1d29205d3f9a2dc84.PNG

IMG_0528.thumb.PNG.b2b3eaa8c5bd5f838367345f6b71cc48.PNG

So, I'll have to do at least another season in France. C'est la vie.

And Finally…

There was no European competition for us this season, but I was ecstatic to see AA Gent win the Champions Cup again:

IMG_0536.thumb.PNG.40bd775606b747dabb0218769db0efbd.PNG

Their fourth win in eleven seasons, putting them level with Ajax and just ahead of Manchester United and Inter Milan on the all time list.

Considering the state of the team you inherited you did really well. And nice to see AA Gent doing exceptionally well after your departure. Goes to show you left the team in a fantastic state, quite the opposite of your predecessor at Lille.

Thanks mate! Unfortunately I'm having a bit of second season syndrome with Lille this campaign. Might have to spend big in the summer!

Season 14

Maybe things had been going too well…

IMG_0559.thumb.PNG.e499dd6d85efd52a28b09572119147e9.PNG

This was close to being a disaster of a season. Yes, we won the league, but that was literally the only title we didn't need to win this season. The only silver lining was a victory in the French Cup.

I think part of the problem was the squad that I'd built. Although there was still plenty of quality, the majority of the players were well into their thirties and were regressing.

IMG_0557.thumb.PNG.91df7368f55f75d490ed2180a2888b8f.PNG

The younger players, meanwhile, weren't of the same standard and weren't able to handle the intesive training I like to implement.

I usually think that I'm quite astute in the transfer market, but I have to hold my hands up and say that this is my fault. I can see a major overhaul happening in the summer.

The League

A second league title for Lille, again beating Monaco to second. It was incredibly close right up until the last game of the season…

IMG_0552.thumb.PNG.7f0a7d80b801e810711484a6c0b7d5be.PNG

…But an emphatic victory in the last game saw us retain the championship.

IMG_0553.thumb.PNG.d1fd2f5d7ef709b157dd3c86b4edf872.PNG

The Cups

Nothing went right in the cup competitions. We were down to 10 men and beaten by Bordeaux in the Trophee des Champions:

IMG_0538.thumb.PNG.405def25913dcb8f0dd2a465472e3226.PNG

We bested PSG in the Coupe de la Ligue (a giantkilling apparently - even though we're the reigining league champions!)…

IMG_0550.thumb.PNG.a032f7bc74a0ccbd30ab0885157c9da0.PNG

…But then succumbed to Olympique Lyonnais on penalties in the next round.

IMG_0545.thumb.PNG.6bd2da8c6e28ec3c4e22d5c89b28faf7.PNG

In the French Cup, PSG were again slain by our plucky side…

IMG_0551.thumb.PNG.5964cddf7efdd4bb2aa43c5bf25c7b15.PNG

…And we managed to see off unfancied Angers SC in the final.

IMG_0556.thumb.PNG.5075892efb49c3d60c1adefc660cb453.PNG

In Europe, we were matched with both Wolfsburg and Manchester City in what I like to call the Group of Wiggins.

IMG_0548.thumb.PNG.490f7839cf213b728131946b0ee354ef.PNG

Unfortunately, we were only able to finish third. As disappointing as it was to slip down to the EURO Cup, I shouldn't be too disheartend - Wolfsburg and City were to meet again in the final in May.

IMG_0558.thumb.PNG.96b996359f21da6e30833695500c71b2.PNG

We didn't last long in Europe's second competition, being beaten 3-2 on aggregate by Dortmund in the second knockout round.

IMG_0549.thumb.PNG.f89752243678f26c7aef3176b317c2fc.PNG

Rubbish.

And Finally…

Time to improve the overall quality of my squad.

It looks like I'll have a budget of £40m to spend on new talent.

How do you guys tend to approach big squad overhauls like this - spend big on two or three high quality players? Or shop around for a completely fresh new team of  potential bargains?

Hi mate,

Just want to say firstly, this is one of my favorite careers to read at the moment, so KIU!

Unlucky this season, and regarding recruitment, when i was managing Lille in my save, or generally is a lot of saves, i tend to look on the expiring contracts screen, there can be some real fantastic deals there. I got Lemos from Las Palmas and a striker who scored 54 goals the next year from there, so maybe have a look?

Good luck with your transfers!

Ah, thanks mate. Really appreciate you saying that.

You mean bidding for players in the final year of their contract as they're cheaper? I never thought of that! I often look in January and try to pick up bosmans on a free but I never thought to look earlier than that. Great tip.

Yeah mate, either earlier or right at the end of the season, as there are some really decent ones, these are two I picked up doing it:

Season 15

After a poor showing last season, our third year in France started with a huge squad overhaul.

Gone were the overpaid veterans and the underwhelming youngsters, and in were a chosen few world class replacements.

IMG_0566.thumb.PNG.cf9838c663223d4bd1fd187172563c6c.PNG

IMG_0572.thumb.PNG.85ff07f36cfd38cf6f62df5c2bc42554.PNG

Here’s a selection of the better new boys:

IMG_0568.thumb.PNG.c6d68b09fd4202293a91c6ec3bcf583f.PNG

IMG_0570.thumb.PNG.47f248f563a0d6c8f1a572c016788c53.PNG

IMG_0571.thumb.PNG.4586c50bc2e6b57c0d67f106520f3cfa.PNG

LOSC Lille were looking leaner and meaner than ever, and it was time to bring home the Trophee des Champions and the Coupe de la Ligue to round off the French leg of our journey.

The Cups

Our season began with an emphatic 3-0 victory over AS Monaco in the Trophee des Champions.

IMG_0560.thumb.PNG.11cce8cbf48cb335f00cfc7b4f3e4342.PNG

IMG_0561.thumb.PNG.4062a17e2127afd71e99c476219f1a13.PNG

Monaco have been our closest challengers during my time in France, so it was satisfying to really put them to the sword.

Things were more complicated in the Coupe de la Ligue, as we scraped through on penalties against Bordeaux in the fourth round…

IMG_0563.thumb.PNG.ea52af30b9ed75d5b76dffba3ce060a2.PNG

…and Monaco in the quarter finals…

IMG_0562.thumb.PNG.ab945353d4c4bd4f8c5877ade50a6c42.PNG

We regained our composure to destroy Lyon in the semis…

IMG_0564.thumb.PNG.eae7f7867d42e9ad930c07d7d0e87a04.PNG

To set up a mouthwatering tie against PSG in the final.

IMG_0575.thumb.PNG.494f03a182d1259f391a660a2acda4a5.PNG

IMG_0574.thumb.PNG.261effee7d8f037a14e23f7c30df3a5c.PNG

And that's every trophy in France ticked off.

Just as an aside It was great to see Chuba Akpom score the second goal in that game. At 35, he should by rights have been one of the golden oldies that I shipped at the start of the season, but it would have broken my heart to let the little guy go.

IMG_0576.thumb.PNG.8ef3882d4d4cb69d17de600b10755e96.PNG

IMG_0579.thumb.PNG.e8896f3ec7e75d7c27848771c1ddadb4.PNG

He was with me in the early days at Gent and it was great to give him a last hurrah with Lille.

Stage 5

So, with France completed, it was time to scour the market for jobs in London.

There was nothing immediately available, but by April, a position did open up.

Who would it be? Arsenal? Chelsea? Tottenham?

Um… no…

IMG_0581.thumb.PNG.feb77bd500187000fce21a04a5424985.PNG

IMG_0583.thumb.PNG.d1de4c7407907e409aee7a301a914686.PNG

IMG_0584.thumb.PNG.2dacbf8a476ba85351ad4a7c97ad51d6.PNG

Yep, Leyton Orient of the Vanarama National were to be my next destination.

One game to play before the season ended, and with it we wrapped up the league title. That's the league title in the fifth tier of English football, by the way.

IMG_0585.thumb.PNG.83aecc183f6325cf2e4d95b38d19434d.PNG

And Finally…

So what do you think guys? Am I mad for dropping down so far down the divisions?

Season 16

So, after 15 years of success at the upper reaches of football in England, Germany, France and *ahem* Belgium,  I find myself in the unglamorous surroundings of Brisbane Road, North East London, competing in League 2.

The O's are the second oldest football team in London (hence the intriguing name) but haven't tasted much success in their long lifespan.

Would I be able to bring to them trophies and glory?

The Squad

There wasn't much of a squad to speak of...

IMG_0586.thumb.PNG.aee83b4437f5399ae781dcca8b418265.PNG

...and so I basically brought in an entirely new team of bargain basement buys and freebies.

Unfortunately I haven't taken a screen shot of the players I brought in, but I would say they were mostly mediocre in standard, with two players for every position.

The League

Although the players were nothing special, the sum must have been more than its parts. We started the season incredibly well, bulldozing every team put in front of us.

I won manager of the month for August. And September. And October. And pretty much every month thereafter.

IMG_0592.thumb.PNG.6b041a0f4cb661778127f7cde7f32a13.PNG

IMG_0590.thumb.PNG.040d917b1092f7f1d0d28e8937319bdb.PNG

We did so well, in fact, that we had won the league by March. And by the end of the season, we had finished on 121 points, with a goal difference of +106.

IMG_0600.thumb.PNG.6eb2e7a9915576ddee085cf08340e01d.PNG

One team that didn't have quite as good a time of it were Sunderland. Relegated to the Vanarama National!

IMG_0608.thumb.PNG.7167e794cb430ee5d2193160e3aa9b59.PNG

One for @SaintPaul 's topic: https://vibe.community/forums/topic/39276-what-is-the-biggest-decline-of-an-ai-team-youve-seen

The Cups

Our form wasn't restricted to just the cups either. We destroyed West Brom in the first round of the EFL cup…

IMG_0587.thumb.PNG.c3c3749e08efa65176e0c5145a2c28ef.PNG

..but, as you may have noticed above, we were dumped out in the next round by Nottingham Forest.

We went all the way in the Checkatrade Trophy though, winning the final in April.

IMG_0601.thumb.PNG.d6c4414e83e6e70d5254dd4d2172c134.PNG

But that was nothing compared to what we managed in the FA cup. Check it out:

IMG_0593.thumb.PNG.ed0070b2b0ee31baf4de560fc3ab8301.PNG

IMG_0595.thumb.PNG.0a72649e50fed75e6fb98df87e099e5a.PNG

IMG_0602.thumb.PNG.332106c2adb9b6f15d32f5002b45e696.PNG

Yep, victory over Palace in the semis (with 10 men!), meant that Leyton Orient, of League 2, were to face Arsenal in the final. I couldn't believe it.

We couldn't could we?

IMG_0605.thumb.PNG.8128c5f44cd882b8cfc5f798535c0049.PNG

IMG_0606.thumb.PNG.d30030b6fb9b1e871ea068c746e18b7c.PNG

Yes we can!

That is without a doubt one of my proudest achievements. And rounded off a wildly successful first full season in London

IMG_0607.thumb.PNG.8d1ca4ce54a754c5b270620a2a3a84eb.PNG

And Finally…

I had thought that may cheaply cobbled together team were so-so, but they had far exceeded my expectations. Why was that?

Well, from what I can tell, it's all because of Brexit.

So many teams that I looked at had substandard players that were nowhere near as good as the players they had at the beginning of the game. Most were overstocked with 'real' players in their late thirties, and then a bunch of very poor young UK players.

With work permits only going to players that have played 75% of their country's internationals (simplified), only the richest clubs in England can afford to buy the top international talent. The next richest clubs presumably snap up the best UK talent. And everyone else is left with players already on their books and very weak domestic players.

All in all, that means that the state of the English is a lot worse 15 seasons in than it is at the beginning of the game. I wonder whether that will happen in real life...?

Stage 1: Gent, Belgium - Complete

Stage 2: Manchester, England - Complete

Season 17

That dramatic success in the FA cup gave us the opportunity to compete in Europe for the first time in the clubs history. As exciting as a chance to test our mettle against Europe's elite was for our fans, I knew that I had to concentrate on the basics of our domestic campaign if I was going to get this Bradley Wiggins challenge completed once and for all.

Given we're still at least two seasons away from the Premier League, there were two trophies available for us to win for the first time this season: The EFL Cup, and the Community Shield.

The Cups

First up, the Community Shield. Liverpool were the reigning league champions, and so we'd have to best them to get our hands on the trophy.

In a cracking match, we managed to overcome the scousers by the odd goal in 7. What a game!

IMG_0609.thumb.PNG.e2d6a4c547d2029802ac7d7b2d3b6881.PNG

We went a couple of rounds better than last season in the EFL Cup, but were eventually beaten in the fourth round. No pic, sorry!

In the other domestic cups, we were dumped out by Manchester City in the FA Cup (by a 93rd minute goal!) and beaten by Bournemouth on penalties in the Checkatrade trophy. Ah well, you can't win them all!

IMG_0615.thumb.PNG.25e1423591eee46c01611e8939001265.PNG

IMG_0616.thumb.PNG.c9b536bdfc1d57cd3a9a520883dad6ca.PNG

Finally, we managed to give our fans some nights to remember in the Euro Cup. We were given a relatively straightforward group but you can only beat whats in front of you and we sure did that, finishing the group stage with maximum points.

IMG_0614.thumb.PNG.e19fdf76f507a0c195b463b704970195.PNG

We bested Fiorentina in the first knockout round…

IMG_0618.thumb.PNG.593cabba48bac278cad141ea8d31854e.PNG

And went down fighting against my old club Wolfsburg in the next round.

IMG_0621.thumb.PNG.1e853958be01010970efc6a89184418d.PNG

The League

A team that can beat Fiorentina and Porto in Europe wasn't likely to have too many issues with League 1, and we romped to the title with little issue. 149 goals scored in the league, not bad eh?

IMG_0619.thumb.PNG.c90e46d118579d44eb3f1cab18f0fd02.PNG

IMG_0620.thumb.PNG.8d6943f3028f3b13e0d9973fb65b9fbe.PNG

IMG_0623.thumb.PNG.0b2a8f3c79833d03514be031d2de943a.PNG

And Finally…

With a 46 game league, four domestic trophies and a run in Europe, this was one of the longest campaigns I've ever had. All in all, we played 71 games this season.

My main striker, Henri Aboubakar was hitting goals at a prodigous rate. For the whole season he averaged a rate of 1.37 goals per game. Unfortunately, a few injuries and the African Cup of Nations reduced to him only 49 games for the season.

If only he'd have been around for the full 71 games - we could have been close to the magic 100!

Yeah he was a great find! The only shame with players from Africa is that you lose them in January for the AFCON but otherwise there are always some bargains to be found

No European competition for us this season, and the only new trophy we could add to the cabinet is the EFL cup.

Did we do it?

Errrm…. No.

This will probably be a quick update then eh?

The League

Another season, and another league title. Next season Leyton Orient will be competing in the Premier League for the first time!

Looking ahead, it'll be an hour to compete against such massive clubs as Burton, Wigan, Ipswich and Blackburn in the Premier League…

The Cups

Manchester City beat us at the fourth round of the EFL Cup this time around. It was another cracking game but to be honest we were outclassed overall.

We got our revenge in the FA Cup though, embarrassing them 2-1 in the final.

Too right I'm the best manager you've ever had!

And Finally…

We've now won the FA Cup (twice!) and the Community Shield, and so only the EFL Cup and the Premier League title stand between us and completion of the Bradley Wiggins Challenge.

There is the bonus stage of a return to Gent but, given that I'm so far into the game and there are hardly any real players, I don't think I'll take that on.

It's not going to be easy, but my aim has to be to wrap it up next season. Wish me luck!

Stage 1: Gent, Belgium - Complete

Stage 2: Manchester, England - Complete

Stage 3: Germany - Complete

Stage 4: France - Complete

Stage 5: London, England - Active

Bonus stage: Gent, Belgium - Not yet started

Some journey, mate. Some journey. 100+ goals with Leyton :D Epic! Hope you get the same numbers in the EPL. Goodluck in what could be your final season.
