Career 1 season, 1 striker, 80 Goals?

Intro

I'm a few seasons into my 1kc with Ze Gomes and have taken a little break from it. In the mean time I have seen @scratch99 attempting to score 80 goals in one season with a single player. His first attempt was in the championship with Newcastle and Aleksander Mitrovic.

He decided to start the challenge again with a richer club and better striker. I plan to do the opposite.

The Club

citybadge.jpg.37c01b325b1acaf2149bab82c39a1d00.jpg

I chose Coventry City for this challenge. Why? I actually cannot say, other than I wanted to use a League 1 club due to the many cup games available and they stood out, perhaps due to me being a Newcastle fan and Adam Armstrong having a good loan spell there.

The team is pretty much standard League 1 fare and I will have to build a team around my Striker. Speaking of whom.

The Striker

For this challenge I have chosen a striker who will make most non-irish and even some folk say "Who?".

The man's name is Ciaran Kilduff.

inpho_01028295.jpg.c9ce7dece15b39c823c8a1a05dfdf784.jpg

He currently plays for Dundalk and has floated around a few Irish teams in his career with Shamrock Rovers and Cork City making the list.

His scoring record in Ireland speaks for it's self.

Screenshot_20170321-105119.thumb.png.5e06b4c919b3c7a1feeb6f2b277f9741.png

219 games

69 goals........ He's not exactly prolific.

Then why did I pick him? Has to be his attributes right?

Screenshot_20170321-105100.thumb.png.0b995aa504723ef3f5ffe40a5666439d.png

Well, he's ok sporting healthy greens in strength, aerial and shooting. His stamina is ok too.

So it's not his attributes or real life stats that made me choose him, then why?

Because in FMM 2016 I had picked him up as 4th choice striker for Celtic. In that career he averaged a goal a game as a lethal target man. That's it, I liked him last year. It's my reason and you don't have to like it.

However, he will need a team built around his strengths. So onto my summary of June and July

June and July

We begin of course with transfers. Who would I bring in to support my Striker in his quest for 80 Goals?

Screenshot_20170321-103120.thumb.png.996de878f27584b36e2f52b282fde606.png

Here we are.

First I decided to shore up the defence with two new centre halves as my tactic requires them to be the rock at the back. The only real line of defence.

I introduce you to Vegard Forren and Dejan Kelhar

Screenshot_20170321-110559.thumb.png.1821de1f17633c0538bb37b3d8784c0f.png

Screenshot_20170321-110450.thumb.png.42d723e555f142ace98d3f5d83ee1539.png

Defense tightened.

Next I wanted to bring in a playmaker to dictate the play from central midfield and I picked up Mr Lodi on a free

Screenshot_20170321-110801.thumb.png.8c7c229ba884e2d9b019f6ed3ab2736a.png

Nice creativity decisions and passion there. That will do nicely.

Finally I wanted a bit of wing play to suit Kilduffs strengths. So I brought in a winger I had during my FC United save and figured he could do a job here.

Screenshot_20170321-110740.thumb.png.d989a95b0ccf4c91d92eba887b6af50a.png

His attributes aren't too good but I know he can perform.

Also for wing play I brought in Harrison dunk as a wing back

Screenshot_20170321-110513.thumb.png.df453f95770a52bbd04d9cf83605dc80.png

He has decent enough attributes fornthe role aside from stamina.

So there are the signings lets see how they fared in the friendlies. The first is Barrow, a team we should really smash.

Screenshot_20170321-103044.thumb.png.9ee5f4807e9721fb772d0081a74f5dae.png

Not quite how it worked out however but I put this down to a freshly put together squad who are not at full fitness. The next friendly would give a better idea of the team against Solihull Moors.

Screenshot_20170321-103051.thumb.png.ad4c38677b393eaf88bdf8f890fc5dca.png

A game we somewhat controlled but couldn't finish off. Kilduff begins warming up for the season ahead though with a goal here. Now the final friendly of the pre-season was to be a sterner test as we faced the championship side Reading.

Screenshot_20170321-103059.thumb.png.995c329510f6848556ce75b75a46a839.png

This was a decent game where we went 2-0 down early then fought hard to bring the score back to 2-2. The big take away from this is Kilduff scoring 2 against such a side.

Warm up complete, next update the challenge will start priperly and we will see how well Ciaran does

This will be a fantastic challenge, I'm from Coventry and they're in desperate need a striker....(plus 10 more players and new owners)

I'll be following, good luck mate ??

I'm not a City supporter but I know he was very very good here. Best player they've had at the club for years!

Really liking this already! :)

I'm really interested to see how this goes in League 1. I think it will be easier at the top club, which is why I went PSG & Vardy, but Kilduff is already 3 goals from 3 games (only friendlies, but still) and the team hasn't settled down yet, so you've definitely got a chance. Can't wait to see how it unfolds.

Also, great choice with Coventry City - they are one of those teams I'd like to play sometime. I've never heard of Kilduff before, but he looks pretty good for League 1.

Best of luck, I'll be following.

Your guy could really excel with those greens in the right formation and league. Hope you find the perfect combo and hit that magical 80. Best of luck!

Thanks man. Coventry are a team that has potential. There are a few decent young players who could really improve too.

Hopefully so mate. Fingers crossed for the 80 but if not it'll be a fun little ride.

August Update

This is where the season and challenge begins for real.

The first game of the season is against Swindon Town.

Screenshot_20170322-162239.thumb.png.aea90cc6c6f78d19850d423169f439e1.png

In a somewhat even game we take the 3 points thanks to 2 goals from Kilduff, lets continue in this template! Game 2 Luton

Screenshot_20170322-162248.thumb.png.1163e9dbc69050d0af81d5361e7b739c.png

A very goal heavy game which we win 4-2 and kilduff picks up his first hat-trick. 5 goals in his first 2 games is fantastic. Game 3 and Shrewsbury are next.

Screenshot_20170322-162257.thumb.png.d179ab4b542b6354889c4ed161dc307a.png

We lose our first game this season but Kilduff gets a goal as a consolation though next up this month is Bury

Screenshot_20170322-162305.thumb.png.71e418f580f91a7e5abf4bc9344a7d53.png

Another pretty even game which we take 2-0 and Kilduff scores again taking him up to 7 goals. This brings us to the next game where we face Bradford

Screenshot_20170322-162312.thumb.png.eb75a15581970808fd2eaf3dfda8dd22.png

We lose 1-0 and Kilduff goes his first game without a goal. Can he recover in the next game against West Brom, a stern test.

Screenshot_20170322-162326.thumb.png.b22516fd01e4d2275eb4ccd9970e43e9.png

We go 2-0 down then pull back 2 goals mid to late into the second half, one of which is scored by our main man. We then go on to defeat the opposition on penalties. Giant killing! Next up we face Northampton back in league 1

Screenshot_20170322-162337.thumb.png.99434f4ae5a59f747001d1656922ded9.png

We take them down 3-0 in a game where kilduff was rested.

Now we have the final game of this update where we faced Swindon again, this time in the Checkatrade Trophy.

Screenshot_20170322-162543.thumb.png.35040e110a2f5bb42622bfe1e4ad9bfa.png

Swindon get the better stats in the game but we put them down 3-1 and kilduff gets on the scoresheet very late.

So this month Ciaran Kilduff scores 9 goals.

Goals scored - 9

Wow, great start. 9 goals in 7 games. Just keep going at that rate and he'll be pretty close.

But amazing that Coventry played 8 games in August! That's intense. I don't normally play down in Division 1 (although maybe I should) - is that normal? I tend to only get 4 or 5 games in August in higher up leagues.

It seemed like a lot to me too. Need to bear in mind there are 3 cups a league 1 team can compete in and another 8 games in the league when compared to to the premier league etc. So while 8 games in a month isn't the norm it was understandable.

Some shoot-out :) fortunate to not miss out on those extra Cup games straight away. Kiu!

Yeah it was very lucky, after the first two misses I was thinking "well, there that goes" then West Brom players just fell apart on the penalty spot.

Makes sense. Also, I think from memory I might have had an international break in August and that would mean less games in the higher leagues, but I'd guess League one probably plays through them.

September

First match of the month is a league match with Fleetwood town.

Screenshot_20170323-085108.thumb.png.4a110fd59018b598d7e9a2f5ea460bf2.png

It was a relatively even game and our man scored but we did lose 2-1. Next up is a trip to hooligan paradise as we visit Millwall.

Screenshot_20170323-085116.thumb.png.82f54c27656d0815283464c7b33f5396.png

The home fans go home unhappy as we smash their boys 3-0. Nice result and a goal for our guy. Next we welcome Oldham Athletic.

Screenshot_20170323-085122.thumb.png.bf78ac32861398d03525dc0d2347ad0f.png

A Nice 2-0 win hands us 3 points and kilduff a goal. Hitting a goal a game so far this month. Will this continue against the premier league champions Leicester City in the cup.

Screenshot_20170323-085131.thumb.png.29d4db8c3ec0b333b58346f331d25c5c.png

We took the lead in the 24th minute, thanks to a goal from kilduff, but in the second half Leicester had too much quality for us and hit 3 goals in 11 minutes to win 3-1. We move on to our next game undeterred though. We face Gillingham and Ciaran is rested.

Screenshot_20170323-085142.thumb.png.8bcf85da0c3db725fb55830093c4fb6f.png

I do wish he wasn't tired though because in this game his understudy scores a hat-trick. So we move onto the last game of the month with kilduff having hit the back of the net 4 times in the 4 games he has played. The next game is against AFC Wimbledon.

Screenshot_20170323-085150.thumb.png.b43dcfc982773f5a88a29f95c21c8ea4.png

An action packed and even game saw us move 2 goals ahead before having a pleyer sent off and dropping the lead to a very game Wimbledon side. We then have an injury to make the day worse. At least our main man scored though bringing him 5 goals this month. Not the biggest haul but not bad at all.

Goals scored - 5

Total - 14

Nice going. A goal a game keeps you in touch for the moment, but he will need to increase that to make it to 80. Nothing to worry about yet.

A suggestion: Because it's a long hard season and he's going to get tired, you should probably rest him against strong opposition (like Leicester) and play him against weaker opposition (like Gillingham). There is a temptation to play the strongest team in the cups so you get more games, but he's going to get more goals against the (comparatively) smaller teams (sorry Gillingham fans!).

Anyway, keep it up!

Yeah i realised i made mistakes when he wasnt fit for Gillingham. By the time I realised my mistake it was too late. That's normally what I'll do in a 1kc if my guy is tiring.

He definitely needs a few hat-tricks to pull back towards the end goal of 80

Yeah, this challenge is pretty tight. You can go at a goal a game, hit a few hat-tricks and you're back on track, or the goals can dry up for a while and you're in deep trouble. It's like walking a tight-rope! :)

Certainly is. Also an injury could ruin it in one go

This is an incredibly difficult challenge, but Kilduff is giving it a proper good go. I wonder how many games Coventry will manage if you have a few cup runs... It'll be tricky but you can do it!

October

So after a quiet month in September I'm hoping that Kilduff can hit a few more goals in October.

The first match of the month pits us against port vale.

Screenshot_20170324-174751.thumb.png.ba200b5cc3ccdf2db691337df99d30aa.png

A fantastic start as we thrash our opponents 4-0 and our man scored a first half hat-trick. Hopefully this will continue throughout the month and against Portsmouth in the Checkatrade Trophy.

Screenshot_20170324-174758.thumb.png.561823ca26927aa62cce42923a424337.png

Portsmouth control the game handing us a loss but kilduff gets on the score sheet once again. We hope turn this loss into motivation to defeat our next opponents Chesterfield.

Screenshot_20170324-174804.thumb.png.b8afbe82528faca95072e22b925c4a01.png

And we succeed in pushing back to our winning ways. Only one goal for Kilduff but that's better than none. The next game is a match that could prove tough against former premier league side (albeit a while ago) Charlton Athletic.

Screenshot_20170324-174810.thumb.png.7858b3506f53d76eaf4d70fd4ae70ffe.png

A high scoring game sees Charlton put 4 goals past our keeper but also sees Kilduff score 2 which is a handy consolation, the real kick in the teeth was the extremely late red for Bigirimana. He is out for the following game against Oxford.

Screenshot_20170324-174820.thumb.png.018cd902b364c7079fe84328e79ef894.png

A very early injury sees our defence take a hit in this game but we take the lead and hold onto it until the last few minutes when Oxford hit 2 goals in quick succession to win the game. The misery is compounded by a 93rd minute red card for my right back. Seriously guys? Just hold your temper for 30 seconds more! So he is out for the Rochdale game.

Screenshot_20170324-174831.thumb.png.48f7b69332e26b5f8a39b7cb02ef1aff.png

This was a return to our attacking ways as we push a 10 man Rochdale and take a 2 goal lead thanks tongue challenge taker. Rochdale do score a goal shortly after but never really looked like equalising. Does this prove to be the end of our losses? Next up and lastly this month is Wallsal and we will see.

Screenshot_20170324-174839.thumb.png.9364bfbcdd23f45b1ae6b60353784a74.png

In a match where we had the better part of possession and attacking chances we only manage a draw thanks to an early penalty. This finishes our month with a draw.

So I'm this month we played 7 won 3, lost 3 and drew 1. Not the best record but Ciaran Kilduff netted 11 times. A nice little tally there.

Goals scored - 11

Total - 25

Thanks man. At the beginning of the season I was hoping for around 60 games. Let's see how close we get to that haha. I've also thought about being sneaky and dropping a few games if I'm in automatic promotion spot so I can get the playoff games haha. Not really in the spirit of the game though is it?

Don't see any problem with it tbh, people have often fielded weakend teams in the CL to try and get into the EL if the challenge requires a EL win etc. Not sure if you'll need to do it mind!

Double update day

November

October was a great month for Kilduff and really built my hope that he can get the job done. The first match this month is against Bury in the FA Cup first round.

Screenshot_20170325-230508.thumb.png.b419640c70c41651d42a257e192b1dca.png

Bury get the best oartnof the game but we take our chances well and the match ends 2-2. Kilduff scores 2 goals and we handily get another game with the replay. Next up is a league game vs Scunthorpe.

Screenshot_20170325-230514.thumb.png.d79085381eb063826e509678a4060fb8.png

Another relatively even game but we again take our chances to win 2-0, another goal for Kilduff too. Now for the FA Cup replay at Bury.

Screenshot_20170325-230522.thumb.png.c5f4763e44dd2249b2c1a2af91df4415.png

An open game with plenty of opportunities goes into extra time and Bury recur themselves in the 122nd minute then win on penalties. Our opportunities for cup games are really dwindling. Anyway kilduff still got 2 so lets move on to the next game against Oxford.

Screenshot_20170325-230530.thumb.png.c2df516af4a5fb64ce392f1236166ec4.png

A disappointing showing by the lads here we were dominated and lost in the final minute. Not a match we deserved to win by any means though. Also, Kilduff goal so I am happy. Next up are league leaders who are dominating at the top Bolton Wanderers.

Screenshot_20170325-230535.thumb.png.ac2ee32d1d5e762f91fb00f484d836c2.png

We take them down 3-1. Only 1 goal for Kilduff but I'm really happy with the result. This should push the teams confidence up as we move on too. The last game this month is against MK Dons.

Screenshot_20170325-230544.thumb.png.41acb46af602876cf9fb01fe495fa207.png

And we wrap up the month with a nice 2-1 win and a final goal for Kilduff. This brings his total for the month up to 8 goals in 6 games. Not to be sniffed at. And pretty much the sort of ratio needed to complete this challenge.

Goals scored - 8

Total - 33

December

So the second update today will bring us to the end of the calendar year.

First up are the league whipping boys Bristol Rovers.

Screenshot_20170326-181838.thumb.png.6f9f0853424169c2d7158c1de3133111.png

A nice easy 2-0 victory with Kilduff bagging a brace to begin the month in a good fashion. Can this continue in the next game with Southend?

Screenshot_20170326-181844.thumb.png.ae5a4e68b65cddd6dd133e68e21e9ff5.png

Very nice continuation of form from both the team and Kilduff who gets a hat-trick. 5 goals in 2 games so far. Next up is the match with Sheffield United. No easy prospect but we hope to take them down.

Screenshot_20170326-181855.thumb.png.a04af5f78730b30d207711fd35c0b6f3.png

And take them down we do with another 2 goals for Kilduff. What a month he is having long may this form continue and specifically next against Bristol Rovers once more.

Screenshot_20170326-181904.thumb.png.3c78bd4cdd8500d9ee6f1e1eec0ef23b.png

So a lovely 4-1 victory over the league's bottom most team sees Kilduff and his understudy Beavon score 2 a piece. This brings us onto the final game of the update, month and year against Peterborough

Screenshot_20170326-181913.thumb.png.6eae4834ec082c5eb21ff04dbdc116a0.png

A disappointing end to the month but its been a top one for Kilduff he was banging them in left, right and centre. He managed 9 goals in just 5 games. If this form keeps up then the challenge will most certainly be in the bag.

Goals scored - 9

Total - 42
