Part 14 - It's All Relative: A Pompey Cup Run Special

 

 

> We start our run at trying to make 3 straight EFL Cup semis with a routine victory over League Two's Gasheads.

 

 

> Round 2 sees us then get through Premiership Boro on penalties thanks to some Raphael Spiegel heroics.

 

 

> Round 3 sees us upset the apple cart again and dump Man Utd out of the EFL Cup for the 3rd year running.

 

 

> And then Round 4 sees up dump Spurs out in consecutive seasons after another masterful performance!

 

 

- Sadly though,the run comes to an end at the hands of an imperious Chelsea side - though not so imperious that we couldn't do business with them

 

 

> Meanwhile, the FA Cup run ends sadly at the starting line as a determined West Ham see us off in Stretford.

Pompey made several signings in January - mainly depth signings and/or pre-contracts; the following impact signings merit a shout.

 

 

> James Milner joined us in late November as a player-coach,and the former Villa midfielder's proven to be a dependable player and a bridge between the differing iterations of our central midfielders.

 

 

> Arguably the biggest ticket signing of the January window for us, the Croatian international joined from the fringes of the Chelsea side for a relative snip at £1,000,000 to provide a reliable hybrid central midfielder; we'd recently suffered a spate of performances from our central midfielders where they focused more on controlling the park than shifting the ball.

 

 

> Alen makes it 3 Croatians in the squad now after joining from Excelsior Mouscron for £1,200,000 and with potential to be our #1 keeper in the Premiership.

 

Outs:

 

 

> Most of the outs consisted of Blackburn Rovers buying a quarter of the squad to boost their push to get out of League One(!!!), while Duncan Whalley and Sammy Rush's loans were bought out by Morecambe and Barrow respectively. John Souttar, though, was a disappointing move as he basically went on strike to force a move;Bournemouth eventually took him off our hands,but not before making a healthy profit off him.

I'm actually hoping I could get at least 4 or 5 - Chelsea really rotted him down (I believe he only played 6 times in 18 months + a loan spell at AC Milan)

Pompey back into the EPL where they belong, congrats mate.

Look for the EPL clubs that relegated to the championship, those players usually drop in value and are more than happy to "re-join" the top division. Which clubs took the fall this year?
