Career Oxford United Career

Recommended Posts

Hi guys

Following the disaster of my attempt at the Converted Winger challenge I have decided to stick closer to home and take on my own club Oxford United.

Brief History

The club was founded in 1893 as Headington United after playing second fiddle to Oxford City in the first few years off existence the club soon established its self as the biggest team in the city and the county. By the early sixties the club was one of the dominate teams in the Southern League and was looking for election to the Football League. A name change to Oxford United in 1960 was seen as an important step to achieving League status which was granted in 1962 after Accrington Stanley resigned there place. The club enjoyed its most successful spell in the mid 80s under the controversial ownership of Robert Maxwell and the inspired management of Jim Smith. Successive promotions saw Oxford reach Division one (Premier League) in 1985 and although Smith left for QPR in the summer of 1985 the club won its only major honour in 1986. On the 20th of April 1986 Oxford took on Smiths QPR side at Wembley in the League Cup Final. QPR where heavy favourites against relegation threatened Oxford. In the end it proved to be Oxfords finest moment as they ran out 3.0 winners with goals fromTrevor Hibbert, Ray Houghton and Jimmy Charles.  After 3 seasons in the First Division including beating Manchester United 2.0 at the Manor Ground in Alex Fergusons first game in charge, the club was relegated.

By the mid nineties and despite being in the second tier the club was a financial mess with a crumbling ground and a half built new stadium. The club was bought by business man Firoz Kassam in 1999 who went on to complete the new stadium and name it after himself. When Kassam sold the club in spring 2006 underinvestment and a succession of very poor managers had left the club on the verge of relegation to the conference. Relegation was confirmed on the final day of the season with a 3.2 lose at home to Leyton Orient. Ironically we where replaced in the League by Accrington Stanley. The club spent 4 seasons in the Conference but where finally promoted beating York City in the playoff final 3.1 in 2010/11 season under manager Chris Wilder. Wilder consolidated Oxford as a League Two club but left to take over at Northampton Town in 2014. Following a brief spell with Gary Waddock in charge Michael Appleton was appointed in July 2014. In Appleton's second season in charge the club finished 2nd and gained promotion back into the third tier of English football for the first time in 15 years. This is where I step in.

Interested in seeing how your IF in AMC spot does. Goodluck!

That's my thinking. I cant really get my head around that role in AMC guessing perhaps works similar to the shadow striker role in full fat FM.

Very best of luck mate, I enjoy your presentation style and Ledson is a quality player, formerly of Everton I believe? Looking forward to update 1!

Hopefully this is the save that gets me back into careers, need to play a bit more as I've been slacking recently in playing!
